Gravure Gallery Artists: Alex deConstant Throughout my life I have been drawn to the inherent graphic quality of the woodcut. To depict movement from a stagnant material while balancing aspects of atmosphere and color is very challenging. The time consuming technique of reduction woodcut is multi-faceted; many levels of thoughtful planning and improvisation result in the finished image.

I have concentrated on woodcuts over the past decade, and for the past three years I have studied closely with artist/master printmaker Don Gorvett in his Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Gloucester, MA. Studios.

My New Hampshire studio sits on the top floor of a restored 19th century carriage house within walking distance to the granite beaches, reefs, and point breaks where I have surfed for over three decades. An intimate knowledge of this coastline is where my inspiration begins. Its rugged, natural beauty and energy hold endless opportunities for subject matter. Many of my pieces are direct observations of my experience in and around the ocean; they reflect this historic, yet ever changing, region.
